  • Alex Benson, MDDr. Benson joined the General Surgery Residency team in 2015 as the DME. He specializes in Pulmonary and Critical Care, completing his fellowship at the University of Colorado Denver. He brings with him his experience from the University of Colorado as the Associate Program Director of Education in Pulmonary and Critical Care. Dr. Benson is a frequent invited speaker both locally and nationally on critical care topics and about his transfusion research.

    Additionally, Dr. Benson has completed the teaching scholars program through the Academy of Medical Educators where he learned curriculum development. He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the most outstanding educator in the department of medicine “Housestaff Teaching Award” given out annually to one faculty member.

    Dr. Benson earned his bachelors in Exercise Physiology at Linfield College and medical degree at Oregon health and Science University before entering into his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in Internal Medicine. 

    Rebecca Vogel MDDr. Vogel graduated from the University of Colorado Medical School in 2008.  In September 2013 she joined Surgical Specialists of Colorado as a General and Trauma Surgeon working at both St Anthony Hospital in Lakewood and Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. 

    Dr. Vogel has received numerous awards including the Owens Swan Award for Outstanding Promise in Surgery and the Arnold P Gold Humanism and Teaching Award from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She was a nominee for the Humanism and Teaching Award for the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 2009, 2010 and 2012. 

    Pamela Bourg RN, MSMs. Bourg earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Louisiana State University, and a Master’s Degree in Nursing from Boston University. She is a certified TNCC, ENPC, BLS, PALS, ATLS and RTTDC instructor. She has published in the Journal of Emergency Nursing, Journal of Trauma, and Trauma Quarterly, as well as several emergency nursing textbooks. She was inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Emergency Nursing in September 2011 for her enduring and substantial contributions to emergency nursing. She is a member the Society of Trauma Nurses, Academy of Emergency Nursing, and Sigma Theta Tau National Nursing Honor Society. She has also been an active member of Copper Mountain Ski Patrol for over 20 years. Ms. Bourg obtained her PhD in Nursing from the University of Arizona in geriatric trauma research
    Katie DoughertyKatie is the Program Coordinator for the General Surgery Residency Program at St. Anthony Hospital. As a Colorado native, she has over 17 years of experience in Level I Trauma Centers including positions in Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Department, and Administration. Katie is currently working towards a master degree in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis in Strategic Innovation and Change Management, expected graduation in fall of 2017 from Colorado State University – Global Campus.

  • Meet Our Residents

  • John Cordero, DODr. Cordero received his medical degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He was born in Manila, Philippines but grew up in La Verne, CA. He is a fluent speaker of Tagalog. He served in the Air Force for 13 years as a medic (5 years active duty and 8 years in the Air Guard). He was deployed to Balad, Iraq and New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina. His hobbies include cooking, eating, hiking, and playing with his French bulldog, Wilson. When asked what he enjoys about the program, he said, “I love how friendly and supportive all the staff have been. I immediately felt like part of the family on the first day I stepped foot into St. Anthony Hospital.”  
    Daniel Barrera, DODr. Barrera is a graduate of the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He received his BS from The University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL and completed a research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. He was born in Colombia and speaks Spanish fluently. Dr. Barrera moved to South Florida with his family as a young child. During his free time he enjoys traveling, running, lifting weights, skiing, hiking and exploring Colorado.
    Mark Edgcomb DODr. Edgcomb was born in Illinois and is a graduate of Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in Kansas City, MO, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Dr. Edgcomb first spent a preliminary year in General Surgery at Rush Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Edgcomb is recently married and enjoys golf and woodworking in his free time.
    Andreas Hennig, DODr. Hennig was born in Germany but moved soon after to Nepal where his parents built one of Asia’s largest and most successful eye hospitals from the ground up. He spent seven years as a Civil engineer before entering medical school at Western University of Health College of Osteopathic Medicine. He lived in several countries and is proficient in six languages. Dr. Hennig is recently married and when not working he enjoys spending his time with his family.
    Joanne Leibe, DODr. Leibe is a California native and a graduate of Touro University College of Medicine. She is a former medical business owner in the San Francisco area. She has worked in the prehospital care industry as an EMT and in public relations for American Medical Response. While she was attending UC Davis, Dr. Leibe worked as a forensic technician at the Coroner's Office. Artistic, Dr. Leibe enjoys drawing and has training as a tattoo artist. Her other interests include stand-up comedy and her Sphynx cat, Clarice.
