Diagnostic Cerebral Angiograms are performed to obtain detailed information regarding the blood vessels in the brain and the arteries that supply blood to the brain. The procedure involves placement of a small catheter in an artery and injecting a contrast agent, commonly referred to as dye, into the artery so that it can be seen on a specialized x-ray device. The Joint Commission requires that rate of serious complications be less than 2%, and the rate at St. Anthony Hospital was 1%.

Atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, can cause narrowing of the carotid arteries which can lead to a stroke. The carotid arteries can be opened by doing surgery or by placing a stent in the artery. The Joint Commission requires that the complication rates for these procedures be less than 6%, and the rate at St. Anthony Hospital was 4.6%.

Joint Commission National Quality Approval Gold Seal

The Joint Commission St. Anthony Hospital has been awarded Disease Specific Certification for Stroke Care by The Joint Commission. Receiving this Gold Seal of Approval signals that the hospital's stroke-related programs, associates and physicians are leaders in the Rocky Mountain Region.
