  • Reducing Falls with Stepping On Workshops

The leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations is due to falls, especially for our aging community members.   Falls contribute to approximately 33% of injury related emergency department visits and 50% of injury related hospital admissions.
While falls-related injuries occur at any age, injuries resulting from a fall are a big concern for older adults.

    Consider the following:

    • One out of three adults age 65 and over falls each year.
    • Among older adults 65 or older, fall-related injuries are the leading cause of death, now exceeding car accidents.
    • Approximately 40% of people admitted to a nursing home had a fall in the 30 days prior to admission.
    • Even if they are not injured, many people who fall develop a fear of falling. This fear may cause them to limit their activities leading to reduced mobility, isolation and loss of physical fitness, which actually increases their actual risk of falling.
    • Falls are not a normal part of aging and can be prevented.

As part of our effort to reduce falls among older adults, we offer Stepping On Workshops.

    What is Stepping On?

Stepping On is an evidenced-based 7-week workshop that helps seniors reduce falls and build confidence. Each week, participants meet for two hours.  Workshops are led by a healthcare professional and a peer leader.  Local guest experts provide information on exercise, vision, safety, and medication.  In addition, participants learn exercises to help them improve balance and increase strength.
