  • Centura Health, in conjunction with St. Anthony Hospital, is pleased to sponsor two PGY1 pharmacy residency positions. The Centura Health PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program provides pharmacists with the tools to pursue specialized PGY2 training, or prepare them for general clinical practice with an emphasis in acute care. Pharmacists will develop professional responsibility, learn to promote their own professional growth and maturity, and develop leadership and practice skills they can apply to their chosen area of the pharmacy profession.   • Purpose Statement
    The purpose of the Centura Health PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is to provide pharmacists with the tools to pursue specialized PGY2 training, or prepare them for general clinical practice with an emphasis in acute care. Pharmacists will develop professional responsibility, learn to promote their own professional growth and maturity, and develop leadership and practice skills they can apply to their chosen area of the pharmacy profession. 

    Program Overview
    This is a 12 month  residency whereby residents can individualize the program according to mutually agreed upon goals. It offers required rotations in critical care (various areas), internal medicine, infectious disease, emergency medicine, administration, ambulatory care and pharmacy operations. Numerous electives are also available in areas such as hematology/oncology, anticoagulation, transplant and others. Fringe benefits include health / dental / life / liability insurance, 20 days of time off, and a travel allowance for required meetings and conferences.

    Centura Health is the region’s largest hospital network. The pharmacy residency program is based out of St. Anthony Hospital, a tertiary care center and the pharmacy department serves as a teaching facility for the Regis University School of Pharmacy and the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy. The residency program is affiliated with Regis University School of Pharmacy.     Participation and completion of a teaching certificate program through the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is optional, but highly encouraged. Find more information about the Colorado Pharmacy Residency Teaching Certificate (CPRTC) Program.

    Each resident must complete a project which meets the ASHP accreditation criteria.  Residents will be given examples of projects that are available. The residents are encouraged to choose a topic, which, besides being an area of interest to the residents, will also contribute to the advancement of pharmacy practice for Centura Health / St Anthony Hospital. One or more preceptors will serve as advisors for the project. All projects will be in compliance with any applicable Centura Health, IRB, and HIPAA regulations. Residency projects at the Western States Residency Conference and are strongly encouraged to be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

    The following is a general timetable for completion of the project: 

    August: Project selection
    September-October: Literature review; proposal completion, IRB application submitted
    November - December: Research and implementation
    February: Initial results
    May: Regional Residency Conference presentation
    June: Final project submitted. Publication strongly encouraged.

    Residents will receive 20 days of time off to be used for sick days, professional meetings, vacation days, holidays, interview days, etc. Residents may take no more than 5 days off in one learning experience without prior approval from the Residency program director and preceptor.

    It is required that the resident become a licensed pharmacist. Licensure in the State of Colorado will need to be completed by September of the incoming year. Find information on becoming licensed in Colorado.

    Residents are required to work one major holiday (Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years) and one minor holiday (i.e. Labor Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July)

    Benefits listed below will be included:

    • Health Care: Residents will receive medical / dental insurance. 
    • Parking: Residents will have free parking arranged.
    • Travel: Each resident is given a stipend to assist in meeting the expense of travel to a professional meeting(s) as approved by the preceptor. Generally, this will be used for the ASHP Midyear meeting and the Regional Residency Conference.

    Applicants must be a PharmD graduate of an ACPE accredited college of pharmacy and must be eligible for and obtain licensure in Colorado. The application deadline is January 4, 2016. All materials must be received by that date to ensure your application is considered. Applications should be submitted electronically through ASHP PhORCAS. Necessary application materials include:

    • Letter of intent (max of 2 pages) addressing the following questions (at a minimum):
      1. Your reason for doing an advanced post-graduate residency program?
      2. Specifically why Centura Health / St Anthony Hospital?
      3. Your long term goals in pharmacy practice?
      4. Your strengths and weaknesses at this point in your pharmacy career and how a residency will help you develop your career?
    • Curriculum Vitae
    • Three letters of reference using the PhORCAS Standardized Reference Template. Your references are welcome to submit a supplemental letter of reference in addition to completing the PhORCAS Standardized Reference Template. Please include: 1 pharmacy preceptor, 1 pharmacy professional contact (known you for more than half your pharmacy education), and 1 employer in pharmacy.

    An on-site interview is required. Candidates must pass Centura Health’s Human Resource Pre-screening employment phone interview prior to being scheduled for an on-site interview.

    Each residency candidate is responsible for properly completing the online application by the deadline (there will be no exceptions), sending fees to PhORCAS on time AND regularly checking the status of your file online by logging onto your PhORCAS web application. The Residency Advisory Committee reserves the right to review each application on a case-by-case basis.

    1. How do you select residents for your program?
      Each submitted application is reviewed by a group comprised of the residency director, administrative staff and preceptors. The group reviews the letter of intent, curriculum vitae, and letters of recommendation in order to select candidates for an on-site interview.
    2. What does the on-site interview look like?
      The on-site interview is a half day interview. The candidates have several individual interviews with program preceptors and administrative staff. Candidates will be required to present a 15 minute case presentation on a patient/topic of choice. Our goal is to assess communication skills and career goals to determine a good fit between candidates and our program.
    3. What are the staffing responsibilities of your residents?
      Residents are required to work in pharmacy operations every two to three weekends.  They will have an extra day off prior to, or after their weekend shifts.  Residents will not be pulled from clinical rotations to work in pharmacy operations. The first half of the year our residents will help with operations in the central pharmacy.  Depending on resident’s comfort and competence,  they will be later be scheduled for clinical shifts.
    4. How flexible is my rotation schedule throughout the year? 
      We strive to structure each resident’s rotation schedule to reflect the resident’s career goals and interests. Although residents have a core set of rotations for the residency program, and with the resources available, we will work to adjust rotations to meet future career goals.
    5. Do you offer a teaching certificate?
      Yes. We are able to offer PGY1 residents’ the opportunity to complete the teaching certificate program offered through the University of Colorado School Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
    6. Can you sponsor visas for residents who are not U.S. citizens? 
      This might be an option in future years, but at this time, we are unable to sponsor visas for residents who are not U.S. Citizens.
