• Pulmonary Rehabilitation

  • Learning to live with lung problems is a challenge. While St. Anthony Hospital’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation program can’t change that fact or cure your disease, it can help decrease the symptoms and improve your quality of life. This individualized and supervised program combines exercise and education to help you maximize your lung function. It also connects you with experts in pulmonary health and others learning to better their breathing and reduce their anxiety.

Who can benefit from Pulmonary Rehab?

This program is specifically designed for those experiencing:

    • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
    • Emphysema
    • Chronic Bronchitis
    • Bronchiectasis
    • Sarcoidosis
    • Pulmonary Hypertension
    • Pulmonary Fibrosis
    • Interstitial Lung disease
    • Lung cancer and lung cancer surgery
    • Lung-volume reduction surgery (before and after lung transplantation)

    Who’s on your rehab team?

We’ve brought together a dedicated team of respiratory therapists, exercise physiologists, wellness counselors and nutritionists. All are experienced in helping individuals with lung problems improve their health to get more out of life.

    What does this program offer?

Learning to manage lung issues is a matter of body, mind and spirit. Our program addresses all three areas with:

    • Practical Education. You’ll receive the information you need on:
      • Medications, including how various drugs act and their side effects, how and when to use an inhaler, and self-care advice
      • Oxygen therapy, including how to use it more comfortably and safely
      • Diet, nutrition and weight management, to improve your overall fitness
      • Breathing retraining, to make the most of your lung capacity and function
      • Breathing strategies, to help manage various breathing problems
      • Symptom knowledge, to help you assess changes in your breathing and know when to seek medical attention
      • Smoking cessation help, if you currently use tobacco
    • Monitored Exercise. You’ll receive a personalized physical activity plan tailored to your condition and goals. Your breathing and other vital signs will be monitored as you exercise to help you make the most of each session and increase your confidence. Exercise will help you improve your muscle strength and endurance, which will make daily-living activities easier.
    • Psychosocial Support. Many people with chronic lung diseases experience depression, anxiety and other emotional concerns. Your St. Anthony Pulmonary Rehabilitation program connects you with others who can support you in your health journey and professional counseling, if indicated.

    How do I start?

A physician’s referral is required to begin cardiac rehabilitation. When your enrollment is confirmed, you’ll start with a 90-minute orientation where you’ll meet one-on-one with a respiratory therapist and exercise physiologist. This is a chance to discuss your current lung and exercise habits as well as your medical history and risk factors.

Is this program covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans do cover cardiac rehabilitation when it is ordered by a physician. While most insurance provides for 36 sessions, your rehab program will be individualized to your needs. Some plans require a co-pay per visit. Be sure to check what your personal insurance plan covers.
