• Program Goals & Objectives

  • The goals of the St Anthony Hospital General Surgery Residency sponsored by KCU are:

     
    • To provide residents with comprehensive structured cognitive and procedural clinical education in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
    • To provide training in all general surgery aspects that will enable them to become competent, proficient and professional osteopathic surgeons upon completion from the training program.
    • Train surgeons who after having passed the qualifying and certifying examinations of the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery will remain lifelong learners, teacher and leaders in a constantly changing environment.
     

    The program will provide each resident with a sufficient scope, volume and variety of clinical experiences in general surgery:

     
    • Each Resident in the program will document by program completion, participation, under appropriate supervision, a minimum of 750 major surgical procedures, as surgeon or first assistant.
    • During the chief year, at least 150 major surgical procedures of appropriate scope and variety with senior responsibility must be documented.  (Up to 50 of these may be logged as a teaching assistant (TA) with a junior resident logging the procedure.)
    • During each year of the program, progression of surgical responsibility should be demonstrated including an adequate scope, volume, and variety of surgical experience.
     

    The program will also provide clinical learning and experience in the pre-operative, peri-operative and post-operative learning and surgical experience for patients with all diseases which fall within the scope of practice of general surgery.

    In addition, the program will provide educational requirements such as a list of books representing minimal core knowledge of surgery, annually required scholarly activities for which the program will provide direction, support and education (study design techniques, research methods, literature, library access, etc.) and attendance to key committees and team meetings to further the Residents’ knowledge and understanding of the medical centers’ patient-centered activities, procedures and processes and the physicians’ role.

    Evaluations, being an essential key to any high quality training program, will be used frequently and by many members of the residency program team to provide assessment, feedback and opportunities for improvement.
